JBL Headphones Buying Guide
JBL are clearly a great option for those looking to both wired and wireless headphones. But how do you go about choosing the best model for you? We have previously written an article in which we discuss how to choose headphones. Below are tips on buying JBL headphones;
Read Reviews before buying headphones
It’s important, before buying headphones, to go through online reviews. That’s the only way to determine whether or not the JBL headphones that you are interested in are good. Let’s assume here that you are interested in the JBL Tune 600BTN.
Go online to find out what people have been saying about these headphones. Most of the online retail stores selling headphones will have reviews. Read these and find out what others who have already purchased these headphones have been saying. There is no need for you to be a pioneer.
Truth of the matter is, we all look for different things in headphones. There are some things that are universal, but most people look for headphones for use in a particular environment. This defines whether or not the headphones that you are interested in are good. It’s all about functionality. Anyway, below are some of the things that people look for in headphones. Understanding these things will help us determine whether or not JBL headphones are good;
- Sound quality
- Noise cancelling
- Ability to use wired option
- Voice assistants and hands-free-calls
Another thing to consider when choosing JBL headphones is functioanlity. As an example, if you are looking for headphones for running, you will have to go for headphones that have been specifically designed for that purpose.
One important quality to look for when buying those headphones is sweatproofing and waterproofing. You will be sweating a lot when running, so, you need headphones that are protected from that. By the same token, there are headphones out there for gaming, for the gym and for other things. Functionality is something that helps you answer the question; “are JBL headphones good.”
There are also generalized headphones, and these are the ones that we are talking about here. They are designed specifically for their sound quality. They may do well for other functions, such as noise cancelling, but sound quality is the primary of their strengths. Anyway, it’s time for us to take a look at how good JBL headphones are in terms of the above mentioned features;
Are JBL Headphones Good in terms of the above listed features?
We gave a list of features above that people need to consider when buying headphones. Now it’s time to determine whether or not JBL headphones are good in terms of these features;
JBL headphones are good in terms of sound quality
Most people forget this in their excitement to buy new headphones, but sound quality should be the primary of your considerations when it comes to buying headphones. If you go online today, you will notice that manufacturers say a lot of things about their products. Read through the product descriptions and you would be forgiven for thinking some of the headphones on the market today are able to make you breakfast in bed.
However, the thing that you need to take a look at first is sound quality. Go through the reviews and discover what others who have already bought those headphones have to say. It won’t do for you to buy headphones that look and feel good, but that suck when it comes to sound quality.
Fortunately, JBL is really good when it comes to sound quality. We have already noted that the company has been in business for over 30 years. That has to count for something, and it does! If you go through reviews, even for models that have a less than ideal rating, you will discover that sound quality is almost universally acclaimed. If there are complaints about JBL headphones, sound quality has nothing to do with it.
Bass is great with the JBL Pure Bass sound
Each headphones manufacturer has their signature feature, and for JBL, it’s the Pure Bass sound. You cannot talk about JBL headphones without talking about this feature. Bass, it has to be said, has become one of the biggest selling points for headphones manufacturers over the past few years.
The reason behind this has to do with the fact that each musician puts a lot of effort into rendering their sounds, yet much of this effort is lost because the equipment that people use to listen to music does not do justice to the musician’s work.
Bass is one of the features that are lost due to subpar audio equipment. Anyway, JBL is one of the manufacturers that truly do justice to music by rendering it as faithfully as is possible. And JBL headphones excel when it comes to bass.
Beware if you are not into bass
We won’t claim that the rendition is perfect, though. Go through the reviews and you will discover a sprinkling of comments from people who say that the bass can be a bit too much. Otherwise, sound quality is one feature for which there is almost universal acclaim that; indeed, JBL headphones are good.
JBL headphones are good in terms of price
If you are a normal human being, price will be right at the top of the list of things that you consider when buying almost anything. It’s no different for headphones. The matter of price can be rather confusing when it comes to headphones. I
f you go on the market today, you will discover that there are headphones that cost below $20. Yes, you will be able to buy both wireless and wired headphones today for that amount! On the other side, you will find headphones that cost over a thousand dollars!
Are expensive headphones better?
Most people intuitively assume that more expensive headphones are better. That is only part of the truth, however. Yes, headphones that cost more will probably have a better build quality. And yes, they should have a better sound quality.
But if you go through the reviews, you will discover that there are headphones that cost less than $50 that have better ratings than ones that cost over $300. It probably has to do with expectation.
Buy a set of headphones for $300, and you are much more likely to fume should they break down than you would with a $30 set of headphones. So, no, more expensive does not always mean better.
Are JBL Headphones affordable?
No, JBL headphones are not expensive. At least not universally. Thing is, JBL has a range of headphones that fall in different price brackets. The company has headphones that are priced below or around $50, and others that cost around $300. So, if you are interested in JBL headphones, you will probably be able to find something at your budget.
Should price matter
In a perfect world, price should not matter when buying headphones. What should matter instead is performance. However, the world is hardly perfect, so price is a big consideration for most people. However, when buying headphones, try to give yourself some wiggle room. You don’t want to be stuck to a particular price point. If you do so, you will only be setting yourself up for disappointment.
Active Noise Cancelling works great on JBL headphones that have the functionality
Active Noise Cancelling has become another major selling point for headphones over the past few years. Noise cancelling is the ability to shut out outside noises. Most headphones have this passively to some degree. By virtue of covering the ear, headphones are able to restrict the flow of sound into your ear.
However, Active Noise Cancelling takes this ability to another level. There are headphones on the market that claim to have extremely high noise cancelling abilities. What happens is you click on a button and everything outside is instantly filtered out. Or so it is supposed to be.
Noise Cancelling is hardly 100%
Active Noise Cancelling is a major feature in headphones. It’s not surprising, therefore, that it’s also a major source of complaints. The way manufacturers put it, you would expect headphones on the market to offer 100% noise cancelling.
However, very few manufacturers are able to deliver this; at least for ordinary headphones. Not JBL, and not even Bose and Sony. So, when expectation fails to meet performance, the result is often scathing online reviews.
Do JBL headphones have Active Noise Cancelling?
JBL offers a wide range of headphones types. Some of these have Active Noise Cancelling, while others do not. When buying JBL headphones, the thing to note is that the ones that have noise cancelling will have an NC somewhere in their name. So, the following are JBL headphones that come with Active Noise Cancelling;
- JBL TUNE600BTNC
- JBL TUNE750BTNC
- JBL LIVE 650BTNC
JBL headphone without Noise Cancelling
By contrast, the following headphones from JBL do not have Active Noise Cancelling;
- JBL Live 400BT
- JBL Tune 500BT
- JBL T450BT
Is Active Noise Cancelling Necessary?
We won’t lie to you; most people who have headphones that actively noise cancel swear by the feature. However, it all depends on what you want to use your headphones for. If you want to use your headphones outside, as an example, it may not be ideal to fully shut out all ambient noise. However, in a plane, that may be a desirable way of shutting out your annoying seatmates.
How good is Active Noise Cancelling on JBL headphones?
If you read through the reviews, you will discover that JBL headphones have received good ratings for noise cancelling. That’s particularly the case for the Live 650BTNC and the TUNE600BTNC. However, note that Noise Cancelling is not 100% as mentioned. It’s enough to shut out most ambient noises, but some noises will still seep in.
Battery life on JBL headphones is good
Battery life is another major consideration when buying headphones with Bluetooth connectivity. However, it’s not as important as manufacturers will have you believe. Thing is, the average person will only use headphones for about 3 hours per day.
We have carried out research and have discovered that the entry level, in terms of battery power, for headphones that are on the market today is 8 hours. So, the average user will not need to charge their headphones for at least 2 and a half days.
If you go on the market, you will discover headphones, such as LETSCOM Bluetooth Headphones that have batteries running to over 100 hours between charges. That’s a monster. You will only need this kind of power if you are an audiophile.
Note that you may need to compromise between battery life and weight. Those batteries weigh something, and the more the power, the more the weight. Usually.
Is battery life on JBL headphones good?
Battery life on JBL headphones is good. It’s more than adequate. The following are the battery lives for JBL headphones that we have reviewed on this site;
|Type of headphone||Battery life|
|JBL LIVE 650BTNC||30 hours|
|JBL TUNE 600BTNC||12 hours|
|JBL TUNE 750BTNC||15 hours|
|JBL TUNE 500BT||16 hours|
|JBL LIVE 400BT||24 hours|
JBL Headphones are good for durability
Durability tends to a HUGE factor when it comes to buying headphones. So, are JBL headphones durable? Truth is, buying any piece of electronics is usually a chancy affair. There is just no way of knowing how long something is going to last you.
Of course, you get a pretty good idea just from reading online reviews. If one person says a pair of headphones broke down after a few days, you can say meeh, that was probably a fluke. After all, things break down, no matter how good we treat them. However, if there are 5 people who describe the same problem, it should be clear to you that you need to stay away from that product.
What you don’t want to do is to end up wasting your money. Even if you have gone for the cheapest headphones on the market today, your money is still your money, and you deserve to get its worth.
Are JBL headphones good in terms of durability?
Overall, JBL headphones are good for durability. If you go online today you will come across people who have been using theirs for years. We say overall because there are some models that have had issues.
If you are interested in buying the JBL TUNE 750BTNC, as an example, you should be aware that people have reported breakages on one side. Clearly, having an ear piece snap off is not ideal. The weak point appears to be on the foldable sections. It’s not clear whether or not JBL has resolved this issue, but it’s something that you need to bear in mind.
JBL headphones are good for comfort
Comfort level is one area around which you will not hear complaints with regard to JBL headphones. Most of the JBL headphones models are good enough for you to go the entire day without having to take them off. Of course, that’s hardly advisable.
Most manufacturers advise that you take off your headphones every 2 to 3 hours. Otherwise, you risk damaging your ears. Anyway, point is; comfort level is not an issue when buying JBL headphones.
JBL Headphones work great with Voice Assistants and Hands-free-calls
JBL headphones are also good for voice assistants and hands free calls. These features come in handy when receiving and taking calls. They also come in handy in terms of controlling some features using voice commands. JBL headphones come with built in microphones that do a pretty decent job of picking up you voice.
We do have to mention that when making or receiving calls using headphones, the people to whom you are talking will hear a slight distortion in your voice. This applies whether or not it’s a Bose, a Beats or a JBL. The only exceptions are those headphones that come with a microphone that protrudes to the front.
The challenge for manufacturers is to have microphones that are able to pick your voice as you talk with your headphones on your head. Naturally, your voice is projecting forward, and it’s difficult for microphones to pick it up. Some manufacturers, such as Bose, have tried to solve the problem by having multiple microphones that pick up your voice from different angles. However, the challenge still remains. So, you shouldn’t expect 100% call quality.
Many JBL models are foldable
If you move around a lot, you will be looking for headphones that take up as little space as is possible. JBL headphones are good for this. Most of the models sold by the company are foldable. They also come with a handy carry case. This means you don’t need to worry about where you are going to put your headphones as you travel.
With JBL you get the wired option on wireless models
Most JBL headphones models come with a standard size 3.5 mm audio jack into which you can plug a cable for use in wired mode. That is a really useful feature to have. There are plenty of instances when there is really no need to use your headphones in Bluetooth mode.
There are also devices out there that do not have Bluetooth. The Nintento Switch, as an example. So, you need to be able to use your headphones using a detachable cable. JBL headphones are good for this.
